God with Us
Long ago, when Ireland was the land of Druids, there was a great Bishop—Patrick by name—who came to teach the word of God throughout the country. The saint, for he was indeed a saint, was well loved everywhere he went. But one day a group of his followers came to him and admitted that it was difficult for them to believe in the doctrine of the Holy Trinity. Saint Patrick reflected a moment and then, stooping down, plucked a leaf from the shamrock. He held it before them and bid them to behold a living example of the Three-in-One. The simple beauty of this explanation convinced these skeptics, and from that day the shamrock has been revered throughout Ireland and beyond.
So the legend goes...
Sometimes the most effective and powerful method of connecting Christ with culture is to use familiar metaphors drawn from culture. Culture Connection strives to help you connect the presence of God in the world with movies, books, and art. Sometimes the connection will come as an "aha!" moment, all at once, with great clarity. Other times, the connection takes quite a bit of pondering and reflection. Either way, the powerful thing about connecting Christ with culture is that the connection sticks with you. Once it is made, neither you nor your congregation will forget it.
